Well, here's to the inaugural iMUN@AC2008. Whether it was a resounding success or an epic failure, i choose not to declare. What I shall say, though, is that it was probably the craziest MUN hosted in Singapore till date.
Where else, but ACS? 10 countries declaring war on each other, ludicrous press statements, controversial notes passed around, hilarious quotes, goof ups by the chairs, president & sec.gen, what else do you need?
When the ball got rolling it felt to me as though the whole thing was doomed. Multitudes of students from Int'l schools were there to make up the numbers. Indeed, out of the 20 countries, 4 were from Tanglin Trust, 3 were from HCI. The only other local schools were RGS, IJTP and I forget what, oh yeah, ourselves. In the end GIIS swept half of the awards or so, but the conference thoroughly changed my view of international students. They're cool in their own right. But Sol have mercy on us if the first-ever iMUN@AC 2008 council members ever made it into politics. we'd be doooooooomed, to say the least.
At least we kept a (relatively) straight head at RMUN. Haha. No this post isn't being measly, I'm just choosing not to write an Extended Essay de la RMUN.
I wholeheartedly salute Isaac Lee Jie Hao. For his life. He may be eccentric, genius, and plain weird, but he's a good sport, and he has determination. I'm quite sure if I wanted to host my own MUN, i couldn't make it work half as well as he did. Almost no one supports him, yet he works away tirelessly. As press corps, i took the privilege of loitering in the HQ for one morning, and watched him at work. He had to work as one man alone, all his powerpoints, though cheesy and 1950's looking, take a lot of effort, and probably took all his sleep away too.
There's a limit to workload. Admirable job, brother, I won't fail you, 2 years down the road. Have fun at NASA end of July.

Nelly Furtado.
Say It Right.
I would believe this has no relation to my life/thoughts/etc. at the present time.
What i'd like to say though, is that the combinations of this song are powerful. The tone of the lyrics, combined with her voice and the background music gel together rarely well.
as well as U2's City of Blinding Lights.

so, RMUN.
May the 28th, Wednesday, 2008.
GMT+0800, 0730hours.
I'm at the RJC Concourse. Waiting for everyone else to turn up. Mostly girls are present, which always makes me nervous. After a while, everybody else seems to have found someone they know, except me. I don't know what my allies look like, and my delegation is nowhere in sight.
Then, they sluggedly appear. Individually. We sit together, and go over our resolutions and everything. I'm worried because I don't have Russian note paper, but realize there's nothing I can do about it.
Spy Matthias Chia, Clifton's GA2 ally, and ask him to point out Pek Wen Jie to me. Boy was I wrong about either of them. Matthias isn't a poser by any means, but he is super popular, smart, good-looking, practically a Shaun Teo + athletics. and Pek Wen Jie was completely misidentified previously. Reminiscent me of jonathan jamal rhys prentice. Large, strong, talented and with a certain suave swagger.
After the briefing, which was not memorable hence I don't remember it....wait oh yeah there was the completely useless Parade of Nations. all they did was walk onto the stage, take up space, and walk off. lol. So I sat expectantly waiting for things to happen. We were dismissed council by council, and for some strange reason our directors were missing to lead us to the place. So we stood around awkwardly looking at each others shoes. hahhahaha. Then I got acquainted with Jerrell, my lame brudda. and Jaime, my dear ally(: totally not what I expected.( Sheesh, I must sharpen my mental construction.) Wen Jie led us lot to the venue, being a Rafflesian himself, we settled down. I met Douglas. HAHA. Douglas is cool, in the annoying way. a.k.a. Serbia. Both of us were to silently rofl at almost everything said on Day 1 for no apparent reason. heh.
So, opening speeches. Was trepidatory about mine, but in the end I wasn't called upon, thankfully. Thara Gopalan took the mic, which she would proceed to do about almost every other turn through RMUN. Realized how terribly, terribly unprepared I was, because I hoped to win. Almost didn't talk at all, until we came to discuss my resolution. Thara's resolution failed :P no hard feelings eh? but mine passed. whoo. Russia. mother russia pwns you.
For the lunch break, I finally got to know all of my new friends. They're ALL cool people, honestly. At the end of day 2, i was supremely overjoyed, because my resolution passed.
And then, Kurt said that doesn't matter, you gotta be an 'on' speaker. Which made me crestfallen because I couldn't do it. I'm sec 3. I had little confidence concerning RMUN. No, I'm not trying to make excuses. I just think I wasn't competent enough to do it. Nevertheless I learnt an immense amount of lifeskills. Oh, and I realized the USA delegate was Yi-Yong! O: it was superly surprising to see him, there, after, what, 4 years? He was PEPS head prefect and top PSLE scorer when I was P5. I got The Day After Tomorrow DVD off him X)
Day 2 required little preparation, due to the passing of my resolutions. Only the countries bidding for a permanent seat in the Security Council needed to make their resolutions to present the following morning. Well, Egpyt failed, Germany succeeded, Pakistan succeeded, and we were halfway through Japan's reso, when it was time to break for lunch. Everybody knew what would happen next. the RMUN Crisis. Truth be told, it got blown out of proportion. The issue was stark and serious enough, but it simply wasn't as exciting as it had seemed. North Korea has a food shortage, South Korea refuses to help. North Korea threatens to declare nuclear war. Russia and China are on DPRK's side, USA on PRK's. ooh, fun fun.
Haha, everyone was like omg, groannnnnnnn when they were 'presenting' the crisis to us, because Russia, China and the US were involved. :P wheee. Being a P-5 Nation does have benefits. Later on, at a stalemate, news from the Security Council Crisis session proclaimed that DPRK withdrew the threat of nuclear warfare. Heh, they're smart. (Russia and DPRK are ACSIndep, after all.) Lol, and we postponed debate till Day 3, which 'condemned the PRK civilians to certain death, destruction and annihilation' in the words of the beloved director. okay the words are probably nowhere near that, but yeah.
Day 3. Crisis got resolved, through Serbia's hard work. Matthias Chia's delegation. Truth be told, I thought they should have won, but we shall see..
Resumed debate on UNReform issues, passed Japan's reso. Adjourned for break and we were to have the Fashion Parade. My favourite part. I, dear people, am now a Komityet Gosudarstvennoy Besopasnosti agent. KGB. yeah. with COOL SUNGLASSES AND A GUN!. bang, bang. ha y'all just died.
and whaddaya know, Russia. won. RMUN Fashion Parade 2008. we rule the roost. At least we won this, hence weren't completely brokenhearted, though rather still. T.Shanmugaratnam's son was in the USA delegation (HCI , if you didn't guess.) He won his council, they won overall. Don't we all wonder why? I know USA did well, but I think UK and Serbia did way better than them. In UNReform, Pek wen jie got best delegate, with Kenneth getting honorable mention, and I forgot who else. They're really good, truth be told.
After that we had dinner and dance. I learnt a HELL lot about all my knew friend's characters. I didn't dance, Jaime didn't dance, Clifton didn't dance. (: and I'm glad about it. Met a lot of new people, talked a lot, basically had a heckuva time with new friends. and it doesn't get any better than this: THEY HAD BROCCOLI AT DINNER WOOHOO. lol XD
Argh. I feel like I'm bursting with so much to say. But I simply am unable to transcribe feelings into words. I'm only any good at transcribing words to feelings. I love everyone I met at RMUN 2008. It's miraculous, how close we grew in the brief span of 3 measly days, bonded for a long time to come. We love each and everyone amongst us. (: So do I.
RMUN isn't just a model of the UN, or for the UN. It changes your life. And it's the best time I daresay I've ever had. i've got iMUN@AC next week too, hope to go for THIMUN at EOY.
Next Year, ACSIndep will be back. with me at the helm. We. are going to be. the best delegation at RMUN'09. I can do it. WE can do it. we WILL do it. :D
RMUN-UNReform, 2008, forever
ACS, forever.
